S and P Global Market Intelligence virtual world use

Over 4000 consumers participated. And while the overall sample was demographically diverse, Neil notes, "respondents were heavily tilted toward millennials in urban settings. This dynamic likely produced an outsize representation of digital natives, or virtual environment 'early adopters,' which while not an accurate representation of the overall population still provides valuable insights into a wide range of consumer perceptions." Agreed!

In the first slide (above), S&P asked consumers about what specific virtual experiences they engaged with recently.

No surprise that Minecraft, Roblox, and Fortnite are the most popular platforms named, since all of them have 100 million monthly active users or more (or in Roblox's case, much more). Just as interesting to me is that VRChat is the fourth named virtual experience, when that platform's MAU is much smaller (closer to 12 million).

Relatedly, Second Life is pretty high up among the platforms named, even above virtual worlds with far higher MAU, including Rec Room and ZEPETO, both of which have tens of millions users. (But skew much more Gen Z, who are much less likely to take an online survey, versus Millennials.)

Another notable datapoint is that most of these platforms have seen increased usage (at least in this S&P survey) from 2024 to 2025:

Just in time for the long weekend (at least here in the US), here's four lovely SL machinimas to watch, montage tributes to Second Life sims shot and edited by Sabina Valeska.

"Every time I visit a sim and feel chemistry with it," she tells me, explaining her artistic process, "it’s like hearing music playing in my head, and that’s when I feel I have to execute it right away.

"I first came across SL by chance in 2009, but it wasn’t until 2016 that I began experimenting with making music videos. Back then, resources were still quite limited—for example, there weren’t many creators producing high-quality animations, and material textures weren’t very advanced yet.

S and P Global Market Intelligence virtual world use

Now on my Patreon for subscribers: Courtesy my metaverse pal Neil Barbour, research analyst with S&P Global Market Intelligence, I'm publishing some pretty interesting virtual world user data infographics, based on a survey that the top intelligence firm recently conducted. With over 4000 consumers participating, it's pretty valuable overview of the market, especially for millenials — and Neil also asked about specific (and surprising) usage data for local favorites Second Life and VRChat. Starting with virtual worlds the survey users accessed in the last three months (above) plus much more.

  • New for Patreon Subscribers: A Real World Financial Expert’s Concerning Data on Second Life’s Linden Dollar

    August 27, 2025

    LindeX linden dollar value

In recent months, many Second Life merchants have reported experiencing a significant and steady decline in sales. As a top seller of home decor recently put it to me, “the slowdown has been happening way before Summer; since March of last year, we progressively lost 5% every 6 months.” Indeed, 1 in 3 merchants surveyed recently told me that sales since 2022 have shrunk by over 20% — as detailed in my report on the state of the SL economy in 2025.

I’ve been looking into this over the last month or two, and may finally have an explanation, or at least a key part of it. To put it bluntly and briefly:

There are way too much un-bought Linden Dollars in Second Life’s economic reserves, not enough in-world sinks — and a growing need for more active, paying users.

In Case of Memory, Set Fire.

Len. T’s thought-provoking “In Case of Memory, Set Fire” made me smile because we need more people who want the truth, even if it burns. Truth is often uncomfortable and most of us prefer to fool ourselves. We do this in relationships, at work, and in politics. We would rather polish a turd and comfort ourselves with lies.

But isn’t the horrible road America is on due to too many of us preferring gold-plated turds to rough diamonds? Let’s warm ourselves with some honesty, as uncomfortable as it gets. I think Len is from France, but there are gold-plated turds all over the world. Sadly.

    Rec Room Maker AI

Bad news for Rec Room, a metaverse platform with impressive user growth across multiple platforms. (For my book's new afterword, I'm tracking it has having around 40 million monthly active users, mostly on mobile and consoles.) Despite that, the company co-founders announced they were laying off half the staff.

The stated reason in the announcement is quite interesting: Trouble optimizing UGC content across all the compatible platforms, a problem which was made only worse by introducing Maker AI, a prompt-based creation tool:

While we did see creation happening on mobile and consoles, we never got to the point where those devices were good for building stuff that other players engaged with. And some of our efforts to bridge that gap (e.g., Maker AI) just frustrated our more impactful creators.

At the same time, those lower-powered devices still produced millions of pieces of content. This put a huge strain on the team, who had to figure out tools and procedures to review it all. Making all this run across every device was a massive technical challenge and burden.

Emphasis mine, because it echoes a concern I've been raising with the excessive excitement over gen AI: The likelihood that introducing simple prompt-based creation into metaverse platforms would just disincentivize the dedicated, most ambitious content creators in the user community.

You can see that in one of the top voted comments in the YouTube video introducing Rec Room's Maker AI:
